IP Records/Formalities Team Member

We’re looking for people to join our IP Records and Formalities team in our Bath office.  You’ll be joining a patent and trade mark attorney firm that works to protect some of the world’s leading brands and newest innovations. In addition you’ll be working in one of the UK’s most beautiful and historic cities renowned for its great quality of life.

Having excellent team-working and prioritisation skills goes without saying, but you’ll also need to be the kind of person who enjoys a challenge and likes using your initiative.

What you’ll be doing

This is a varied position, but your tasks will typically be to:

  • Manage official correspondence from the UKIPO, EPO, European Union Intellectual Property Office and WIPO, as well as incoming correspondence from attorney firms around the world, and docket due dates in our IP case management system (Inprotech);
  • Set up new cases relating to patents, registered designs and trade marks;
  • Look after the firm’s reminder system for attorneys;
  • Work on patent formalities, including preparation and filing of patent forms at UKIPO and EPO, validation of European patents, and recordals of assignments and name changes at IPO;
  • Liaise with external providers about our clients’ patent, design and trade mark renewals.

You’ll be based in our Bath office, in the city centre. Unless already qualified as a Patent Administrator we’d like whoever takes on this role to study for and pass the CIPA Introductory Certificate in Patent Administration.  After that you may also, if you wish, have the opportunity to take the CITMA Paralegal course.

Who we’re looking for

Role 1:                  This role requires someone with experience in the IP field. As well as being someone who thrives as part of a team, you’ll be used to using your initiative, resourceful enough to work independently when needed, and excellent at prioritisation. Combined with strong problem solving and IT skills, your attention to detail will be first-class. In terms of academic background, we’re looking for at least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A* to C, including English and maths.  Higher qualifications such as A levels or equivalent, or even a degree may be an asset, but we are more interested in your experience and proven skills in the IP field.

Role 2:                  This role does not require any previous experience within the IP field. Having excellent administration skills goes without saying, but you’ll also need to be the kind of person who enjoys a challenge and likes using your initiative. In return, we’ll give you training, as well as the opportunity to work towards a qualification. As well as being someone who thrives as part of a team, you’ll be used to using your initiative, resourceful enough to work independently when needed, and excellent at prioritisation. Combined with strong problem solving and IT skills, your attention to detail will be first-class. In terms of academic background, we’re looking for at least five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades A* to C, including English and maths; and higher qualifications such as A levels or equivalent. Perhaps a degree although that’s not essential.
