European Patent Attorney
UK Patent Attorney
M.Eng. Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath
Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, University of Birmingham
Ritchie joined Abel + Imray as an Associate in 2021, and is based in our Bath Office. He has a technical background – to Ph.D level – in mechanical engineering, and qualified as a European and Chartered UK patent attorney in 2016.
Ritchie handles patent and design work in a broad range of engineering fields, and is particularly interested in sustainable energy systems, especially those relevant to transportation. His interests extend to urban and air mobility, and, more recently, to the area of micromobility. His strong engineering background, and commercial awareness of the challenge of bringing innovations to market, enables him to be well-positioned to advise ambitious start-ups seeking investment or entities looking to expand.
Before entering the intellectual property (IP) profession in 2011, Ritchie worked for several years in the transport sector, gaining industrial experience with a global power generation manufacturer (Cummins), and a leading UK automotive consultancy (MAHLE Powertrain). These engagements led him to further his technical knowledge though Ph.D research at the University of Birmingham into the viability of oxygenated liquid fuels in spark-ignition internal combustion engines. His work was published in leading scientific journals, and his contribution to transportation was recognised by the receipt of several awards.
Prior to joining Abel + Imray, Ritchie worked for IP firms in Yorkshire and the South West of England. His time in private practice – stretching over a decade – has equipped him with a suite of legal skills from drafting, filing and prosecuting applications for SMEs and in-house IP departments, to opposing or defending European patents before the European Patent Office (EPO) for large multinational corporations, including those listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Ritchie routinely works closely with a range of clients on a variety of valuable and challenging patent and design matters. His practice also includes advising on third-party patent and design rights, and providing opinions on validity and infringement (freedom-to-operate).
