Matthew joined Abel + Imray in 1996 and is based in our Bath Office. He is one of our Joint Managing Partners. Matthew built novel laser systems in obtaining his Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews. He is a Chartered Physicist and a member of various professional bodies including the IEEE and the Optical Society of America. He is a Patent Attorney Litigator, having obtained an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Litigation from Nottingham Law School.

He has special expertise in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the areas of optics (especially lasers, optical fibres and metamaterials), radar, image processing, software and telecoms. He has a particular interest in contentious matters, including litigation and opposition and appeal work at the European Patent Office. Matthew works in long-term arrangements on-site with industrial patent departments and directly with engineers.

Matthew leads our Defence group. He has long-term relationships supporting well-known clients, who benefit from his insights improving invention-spotting and IP-harvesting across their research and engineering functions.
