As a Chartered and European Patent Attorney and European Patent Litigator, Matt is able to represent clients in matters before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Unified Patent Court (UPC).

Technical Background
Before joining Abel + Imray, Matt worked as a researcher at Imperial College London, contributing to industry-led projects funded by the likes of Airbus, Rolls-Royce, and Volvo. His research focussed on characterising and modelling the behaviour of fibre-reinforced composite structures.
Matt has published six peer-reviewed papers on damage characterisation in fibre-reinforced composites and authored a chapter in Failure Mechanisms in Polymer Matrix Composites (Woodhead Publishing).
Experience
Matt joined Abel + Imray in 2014 and is a Senior Associate based in our Cardiff office. His practice spans a range of physics and engineering subject matter, with particular focus on aerospace, defence, offshore engineering, optics, and security technologies.
Patents
Matt advises on all aspects of patent protection, including drafting and prosecuting applications in the UK, Europe, and globally. He supports clients in assessing freedom to operate, addressing third-party risks, and managing contentious matters. He has substantial experience representing clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.
Designs
Matt is able to provide strategic guidance on securing design protection across multiple jurisdictions, including the UK, EU, US, and Asia. He is experienced at navigating the differing requirements of international design systems and has particular expertise in protecting graphical user interfaces, in addition to more conventional product designs.
